Recent Excavations

[edit]

The excavations made since 1988 at Claros, the sanctuary of Apollo depending on Colophon, have demonstrated that there has been there a religious area around an spring of good water since the Xth century B.C. The first known construction is a round altar of the second half of the VIIth century. Il has been covered around the middle of the VIth century by a large rectangular altar (14,85 x 6,05 m); in the same time a temple of marble was built for Apollo around the spring while Apollo’s sister, Artemis, had her own precinct and a smaller altar (3,50 x150 m): next to it were found the bases of two korai, one of which is preserved (the head is lacking). There were at least four statues of kouroi dedicated to Apollo; three of them, incomplete, have been found.

Very small changes occured in the sanctuary between the VIth and the end of the IVth century. A new planning of the sacred area was conceived then, with monuments on a larger scale; most probably, the execution started only after the terrible events of the beginning of the IIIrd century B.C. Later in the IIIrd century the new altar and the new temple of Apollo were in construction; the adyton is well preserved and allows some understanding of the importance of the spring for inspiring the oracle.

After the first times of the Roman Province of Asia (end of IInd century B.C.), prominent citizens of Colophon helped in increasing the authority of the sanctuary, the importance of the religious competitions and the fame of the oracle. For celebrating the big sacrifices in front of a greek and non-greek crowd, four rows of iron rings fixed on heavy blocks allowed to kill hundred victims at the same time. Claros is the only sanctuary in the greek world which offers a clear lecture of the way the priests could perform the hecatomb.

If you would like a citation for your recent Paris edit, you can use this site - it is an official government site, and quite comprehensive and complete.

Just did it, with english version. Thanks! Disdero 22:21, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We seem to keep the same hours. What I meant by citation is something to add to the end of your contribution as a source:
<ref name="roman_cardo">{{en icon}} {{cite web| url=http://www.paris.culture.fr/fr/ville_he_plan1.htm| author=www.paris.culture.fr|title=Paris, Roman City - "The Grid Layout"| accessdate=2006-08-26| format=HTML}}</ref>
...that at the end of your text, would look like this:
"...the highest point on the Saint-Geneviève hill.[1] "
...and the reference would appear in the "references" section at the bottom of the page (below the "</references>").
I really do wish wiki had an easier way for Wikipedians to cite sources, but this is the best there is for now. The most important in all the above is the "cite web" template (anything appearing between "{{ }}" is a template) and you can read about how to use it here: Template Talk:Cite web.
Hope this helps - cheers. thepromenader 06:59, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, we have the same hours! maybe are we on the same longitude, close to the Bièvre... Regarding wiki technicalities, I must confess that I'm a bit afraid creating a mess in the article mixing html (I thought that it was +/- not welcome [wikify!!??]) & wiki babble, and I definitely prefer focus on Roman or Etruscan technicalities.

Don't hesitate to edit my contrib!!

Have a nice WE Michel Disdero 07:28, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quite close to the Bièvre indeed - what's left of it. I quite understand what a mess the above must look like - I made ample use of the "Show preview" button in my early Wiki days for sure. Actually the code above is complete (without the "<nowiki>") - all you have to do is cut and paste if you like. You have a great WE too. thepromenader 07:45, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, I don't know who I should speak to about this important matter. The Golan article has been taking over by Israelis and they have removed everything mentioning an occupation and changed it to "disputed" They have also removed the "the neutrality of this article is disputed" that was on top of the article while it is written in a completely pro-Israeli way. Please do something about this! —Preceding unsigned comment added by SwedishArab (talkcontribs) 19:55, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Proposed deletion of Omemo

[edit]

The article Omemo has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

An unsourced article about a beta software product that is no longer maintained. The article has been tagged with a notability template since July 2009. I think it's safe to say that this fails WP:GNG and WP:Notability (software).

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:53, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
